The Edgar Hotel Martha’s Vineyard: Your Offshore Home Away From Home
As a guest of ours at the Edgar Hotel, you get to enjoy as your Martha’s Vineyard home base one of the island’s loveliest and most history-rich settlements. Edgartown includes a slew of 19th-century architecture, including the famous Old Whaling Church, one of the greatest embodiments of Greek Revival style in all of New England; with a room or suite at the Edgar, you’re a mere 10-minute stroll from the heart of the Edgartown Village Historic District downtown. For a summer escape to the Vineyard, it doesn’t get any better than a guest room or suite at the Edgar Hotel. These spacious accommodations, filled with natural light and showcasing artwork by Paul Elliott Thuleau and Abraham Pieciak, immerse you in the spirit of the island with their whitewashed bed frames, fine cabinetry, and other nautical flourishes. With supremely walkable Edgartown at your doorstep and the convenience of a Vineyard Transit Authority bus spot and bike paths close by, you’ve got a wealth of island sightseeing, shopping, and dining to enjoy. As it happens, you don’t even need to leave our hotel to enjoy outstanding cuisine: Our on-site Town Bar & Grill serves up daily lunch and dinner, weekend brunch, and late-night eats, plus a delightful outdoor beer garden.
Summer Pleasures on Martha’s Vineyard
It’s not summer on Martha’s Vineyard, of course, without plenty of quality beach time, and some of the island’s finest sands are just a seashell’s throw (give or take) from your Edgar Hotel room or suite. They include beaches right here in the village and its immediate surrounds, including Fuller Street Beach, Lighthouse Beach, and Katama Beach. Close by you’ll also find the gorgeous strands of Chappaquiddick Island—“Chappy,” in local parlance—which is, most of the time anyhow, actually a peninsula within Edgartown’s limits. On the other side of Martha’s Vineyard, don’t miss Moshup Beach and the famous Cliffs of Aquinnah: beautiful sedimentary bluffs whose vibrant hues, local Wampanoag legend says, stem from the blood of a whale the giant Moshup pummeled upon the cliffs. Sandy and bluff-edged seashores aren’t the limit of Martha’s Vineyard’s natural beauty. Summer’s ideal for hiking the island’s many preserves, from the small but superb Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary with its sandplain grassland and tidal ponds to the sprawling Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary—where guided kayaking and standup-paddleboarding are offered in the summer—and the Caroline Tuthill Preserve, host to serene oak and pine woods, saltmarsh, and other native habitat. Multiple picturesque lighthouses await, including the Edgartown Harbor Light and the Cape Poge Light on Chappaquiddick, plus other coastal landmarks—not least the “Jaws Bridge” featured in Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1975 blockbuster.
